Visit of Professor Nick Cogan from the Florida State University (USA) to the State University of Trade and Economics

General Information

On October 08, 2024, State University of Trade and Economics welcomed Nick Cogan, Professor of the Department of Mathematics at the Florida State University (USA). Professor Cogan is an expert in mathematical biology, the use of mathematical tools in the study of bacterial physiology, microfiltration, and the application of applied mathematics and Data Science in biological processes. The cutting-edge research of the Department of Mathematics at Florida State University covers a wide range of problems in pure and applied mathematics, and research projects address problems in theoretical mathematics, mathematical modeling and computation, as well as applications in such fields as finance, life and earth sciences, and Data Science. 

Professor Cogan presented the scientific vectors of the current scientists of his department, the materials of his research activities, and gave a lecture on “Mathematical Modeling and Sensitivity Analysis in the Life Sciences with Numerical Recipes” to students of several faculties of SUTE.  During the presentation of Professor Cogan's materials, students in the audience and on Zoom broadcast asked questions about the research methodology, achieving the quality of scientific research, the peculiarities of conducting experiments and showed an active interest in the scientific activity of the honored guest. 

The visit was facilitated by the Head of the Department of Digital Economy and System Analysis, Professor Andrii Roskladka, who in the summer of 2024 completed a research internship at the Florida State University. The Department of Digital Economy and System Analysis made a presentation of its educational and scientific achievements. In particular, Associate Professor Olena Ivanova, PhD, presented to Professor Kogan the features of the study programs, the results of the Department's scientific activity in the field of modeling the processes of the digital economy and Data Science, current and prospective partnerships and the experience of the Department's double degree program. The students of the department Tetiana Ivanova (FIT 3-11), Yuliia Shcherbyna (FIT 3-11), Roman Boldak (FIT 3-11), Nataliia Stolbova (FIT 1-8am), Kateryna Zabazna (FIT 4-10), Alina Romanenko (FIT 2-6m) reported on the results of their educational and scientific activities, shared their impressions of studying at the educational programs of the Department of Digital Economy and System Analysis and the experience of international activity. 

At the end of the eventful visit, Professor Cogan met with the staff of the Department of Digital Economy and System Analysis in the hall of the Rector's Office. The translation was provided by Associate Professor of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Yuliia Drozdova. During the meeting, the parties discussed further prospects for joint scientific and educational activities of the State University of Trade and Economics and the Florida State University.
