General Information

This leading idea was the basis of an incredible lecture on the topic: «Elections-2024 to the European Parliament: impact on Ukraine» by excellent speakers – Mr. Yannis Karamitsios, author of the book ‘Time for a European Federation’ (Peter Lang, 2021) https: //rb.gy/anien2, legal officer of the European Commission and a leading expert on European integration and Miss Diana Sokotun, a political scientist from Ukraine. The event took place on May 1, 2024 within the framework of the Jean Monnet Chair in EU Internal Market Law.

The theme of the event and charismatic speakers brought together more than 50 participants: students, the academic community and representatives of the general public from Ukraine and Brussels.

Mr. Yannis Karamitsios explained the legislative procedure in the EU, the composition of the European Parliament, organizational aspects of the electoral process in the EU, the distribution of parties in the European Parliament and the priorities of the European Parliament's work for the next 5 years according to sociological surveys.

Miss Diana Sokotun shared ideas about the impact of the elections to the European Parliament on Ukraine, and also determined what features the elections to the European Parliament will have in Ukraine, when it will become a member of the EU.

The lecture was well structured, engaging and easy to follow.

Among the numerous questions that the attendees had the opportunity to ask the speakers were the following:

  • Are Russia’s attempts to influence the elections to the European Parliament recorded? How does the EU counter this?
  • Will we see an increase in Eurosceptic sentiment during the European Parliament elections in June?
  • Will it be possible to preserve the majority that supports Ukraine in the new composition of the European Parliament?
  • To what extent does the theme of the full-scale invasion of the russian federation in Ukraine dominate the debates of the pre-election campaigns to the European Parliament?
  • Isn't the voting age (16 years) too low in some EU member states?

The speakers successfully conveyed their knowledge and ideas to the audience. The enthusiasm of the speakers and the ability to motivate made this event extremely attractive and inspiring for all participants.

Discussions are planned to continue after the elections to the European Parliament.

In case you missed the event, we have record.
